Philip Leigh Johnson, a native Floridian and 35 year resident of Sanibel, passed awayon April 17 in Jacksonville, Florida. He and his late wife Eddie owned and operated apopular island gift shop, lle Crocodile, Phil closed lle Crocodile in 2005 after 25 years.Before moving to Sanibel he and Eddie each worked for Rich’s in Atlanta as AssistantDisplay Director and Assistant Fashion Coordinator respectively. They then moved toNew Jersey where Phil worked for Bamberger’s, a division of Macy’s, as Vice Presidentof Visual Merchandising, designing special events as well as store display layouts.During his years on Sanibel Phil used his creative talents to design elaborate themedparties as fundraisers for the Pirate Playhouse, Sanibel Captiva ConservationFoundation, Gulfshore Ballet and the American Cancer Society.A graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, May 5 at Fort Myers MemorialGardens, 1589 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers.Any of Phil’s friends are invited to join the family at the service.Philip is survived by his sister, Dorothy Ponce, her husband Jose and their son Hilario.He is also survived by his late wife’s sons Richard Smith and wife Patricia and ClaySmith and wife Brenda, three grandchildren, five great grandchildren and one greatgreatgrandchild.
