Richard "Dick" Miller's Obituary
Richard (Dick) Miller died on February 15, 2017, in Shell Point, Fort Myers, Florida. Dick was born in Putnam, CT March 23, 1927 to Roderick and Florina Miller. He attended local schools and graduated from Assumption Prep School, and Assumption College, Worchester, MA. Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in San Diego, CA. As the next step in his career he attended Tufts University Medical School in Boston, MA, graduating in 1954. Subsequently Dick joined the U.S. Navy in 1954 completing both his internship and General Surgery Residency in 1959 at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Chelsea, MA. Upon completion, he was transferred to the U.S. Naval Hospital, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and then U.S. Naval Hospital, Camp Lejeune, NC. From 1964 to 1966, he earned an additional residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in St. Louis, MO under sub-specialty innovator, James Barrett Brown M.D. Following this achievement, Dick served seven years during the Vietnam War at U.S. Naval Hospital, Philadelphia. He retired from the Navy in 1973 as Captain (M.C.) USN. After retirement, he spent 18 years in private practice in Springfield, MA. He was chief of the Plastic and Reconstructive Services at three hospitals: Baystate Medical Center, Mercy Hospital, and Holyoke Hospital. He retired from practice in 1991. He leaves his wife, Pauline (Polly) Miller, five sons, Guy (Jo-Ann), Philip, Robert (Paula), Peter (Jacqui) and John (Cathy) and seven grandchildren: Evan, Caryn, Julia, Max, Alex, Kiana and Andre. He is predeceased by his mother, father, and sister, Ruth. Burial will be private at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens in Fort Myers. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Assumption College, 500 Salisbury St, Worcester, MA or St. Columbkille Catholic Church, 12171 Iona Road, Ft Myers, Florida.
