Robert D. Bernson's Obituary
Robert David Bernson, 92, loving father, husband and grandfather, passed away peacefully from complications from COVID-19 on January 1, 2024. Bob was a resident of Naples and Ft Myers since 1999, formerly of Boston, MA. He was born December 16, 1931 in Beverly, MA to the late Louis and Ethel (nee Gorfinkle) Bernson. He spent his childhood in Beverly and graduated from Boston University with a BA Accounting degree in 1952. Following graduation, Bob served as a 2nd Lt. in the United States AirForce.
In Boston, Bob started his own accounting firm with his partner,Jack Sherman. Sherman and Bernson CPA grew over the years and was eventually acquired by one of the top 7 largest accounting firms in the US, Laventhol and Horwath. Bob was a partner in Laventhol Horwath until its close in 1990.
In 1995, he married Isabel Colls, and they permanently settled in Ft. Myers in 1999. They enjoyed 20 wonderful years as residents of Lexington Golf and Country Club, where they were active in every aspect of the club. Bob served as club president and treasurer for many years. Bob and Isabel were surrounded by a wide circle of friends at Lexington who enjoyed golf, travel, dinners and every social event. He continued to be an accountant for his friends, a host for parties in their home and an entertaining personality to all he met.
Bob leaves his beloved wife, Isabel to cherish his memory. He is survived by his loving children, Gary Bernson (Rebecca) of Charleston, SC and Laurie Stolmaker (Neil) of San Francisco, CA, two step-children, Denise Bloom (Peter) of Naples, Fl and Sherrin Weinman of Naples. He is survived by his sister, Sandra Morse and his brother, Hank Bernson, as well as seven grandchildren, Matthew Bernson, Noah and Logan Stolmaker, Lindsay and Michael Bloom, Gregg and Jeff Weinman, as well as 2 great grandchildren, Madison Breunig and Cameron Rusin.
Bob will be fondly remembered at a Memorial Service at 11:00 AM, Thursday, January 4, 2024 at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers, FL 33907.
The family asked that any memorial donations be made to Alzheimer’s Association, to aid in the care and research of dementia.
