Ronald Alan Mortensen's Obituary
Ronald Mortensen, age 91, of Fort Myers, Florida, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026, at HealthPark Hospital in Fort Myers. He was born on July 13, 1935, in Omaha, Nebraska, to George and Elsie (Sellon) Mortensen.
Ronald was formerly of Denver, Colorado, and had been a resident of Fort Myers since 1980. A proud patriot, he honorably served his country in the United States Air Force for 20 years as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialist and bomb disposal expert. His military career reflected his courage, dedication, and commitment to service.
Following his retirement from the Air Force, Ronald continued to serve his community through his work as a custodian with the Lee County School District. He also worked for Van's Plumbing, where he was known for his strong work ethic and reliability.
A gifted master woodworker, Ronald found great joy in creating and building with his hands. He was an avid music collector whose treasured collection exceeded 3,000 records. He enjoyed spending time in his garden and could often be found exploring thrift stores and garage sales in search of a unique treasure. Family and friends will fondly remember his enthusiasm for finding a bargain, his craftsmanship, and his quiet, dependable nature.
Ronald is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Elna Marie (Jorgensen) Mortensen; his daughter, Carol (Robert) Harmon of Fort Myers, Florida; his son, Steven Mortensen of San Diego, California; his grandsons, Robert (Malory) Harmon of Houston, Texas, and Rick (Lynn) Harmon of Randolph, Minnesota; his great-grandchildren, Robert, Amanda, Austin, Ben, and Melissa (Josh) Pirkl; and his great-great-grandchildren, Nina, Leo, and Silas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Elsie (Sellon) Mortensen.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 9065 Ligon Court, Fort Myers, FL 33908. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Burial with full military honors will be held on Monday, July 27, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, Sarasota, FL 34241.Memorial contributions in Ronald's memory may be made to The Gideons International, P.O. Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214.
