Roy J. Schuetz's Obituary
Roy J. Schuetz, a long-time Fort Myers resident, died from natural causes on September 9th at his home in Tallahassee. Born May 10, 1927 in Wheeling, West Virginia to Joe and Theresa Schuetz, Roy excelled in baseball, basketball and track in high school. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Army to serve in World War II, and after the war, settled in Cleveland, Ohio where he met and married his first love, Helen Pachuta. In 1959, he migrated to Ft. Myers, where he raised his family and became active in youth sports, coaching baseball for 27 years in the Tice-East Ft. Myers Little League. Roy was never happier than when he was manicuring the infield at the old Billie Bowlegs Little League Park. He also helped found Lee County’s first Pop Warner football team, the Tice Tigers. In addition to coaching youth sports, Roy was a member of the Optimist Club, spending countless hours each year selling Christmas trees. In later years, he became active in senior softball leagues in Ft. Myers, and an ardent supporter of Bishop Verot baseball. Roy was a passionate fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Florida State Seminoles. Roy started in the wine and spirits business in 1966 as a route salesman with Consolidated (now National) Distributing Company. He ultimately retired as the General Manager of National’s Southwest Florida operation and moved to Tallahassee in 2004. Roy is survived by Helen, his bride of 65 years, three sons, Joe (Rita), Roy “Corky” Jr. (Sarah) and Mark (Cindi), eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Roy, the youngest of seven, is also survived by brother Jerry and sisters Isabel Chagerben and Helen Askew. He was a lifelong practicing Catholic Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home with entombment to follow in Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until the time of the service.
