Russell "Russ" Allen Gilbert's Obituary
Russell “Russ” Allen Gilbert, 93, of Fort Myers, passed away Saturday, December 30, 2017. He was born July 7, 1924 in Canton, OH to Frank and Vera (Coughlin) Gilbert. He moved to Florida in 1981 from Farmington, MI. He retired in the late ‘80s as the General Manager for John Scanlon Automotive Group. Prior to that, he had served as General Manager for Galeana Chrysler-Plymouth.Mr. Gilbert served U.S. Army during World War II. Several years ago, he and his late wife, Nancy, moved to Cypress Cove Retirement Community where he was very involved. He was very well liked among the residents as most referred to him as “Mr. Terrific”. He was one of the founding members of the Cypress Cove Media Committee, membership Chairman for the FLiCRA, past president of the Resident Council, past chairman for the Activity Committee and an active member of the Philanthropy Committee.A program called “Meet Your Neighbor” resulted from his efforts while serving on the Media Committee. It provided residents to share their stories with the whole community. The taping was made possible from the help of the Media-Arts Department faculty and students from Cypress Lake High School.Mr. Gilbert is survived by his children: John Russell Gilbert and Suzanne Gilbert; his grandchildren: Sarah, Chelsey, Kalli, Austin, Candace and Joe as well as three great grandchildren: Dakota, Sydney and Max. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Gilbert in 2016 and his daughter, Gail Gilbert, also in 2016.Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday, January 5, 2018 at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home after which he will be laid to rest with his loving wife in Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
