Sonia May Hayward's Obituary
Sonia May Hayward, 86, of Fort Myers, Florida and Mashpee, Massachusetts, died unexpectedly on Monday, March 2, 2020. She was born on April 30, 1933 in Frias, Argentina, the daughter of Charles Ewart and Margaret Anne (Beale) Laight.
Mrs. Hayward graduated from La Universidad de La Plata with a degree as a translator. Soon afterward she moved to London, England, where she was married to C. Michael Hayward. They moved from England to Ottawa, Canada, and then to Massachusetts, where they lived for more than forty years before dividing their time between Massachusetts and Florida. They celebrated 63 years of marriage last March. Mrs. Hayward was a long-time member of the Harvard Garden Club and the P.E.O Chapter in Upper Cape Cod.
Sonia was an avid gardener who could encourage any plant to grow (and even bring some back to life); she enjoyed water aerobics, tennis, bowling, and art; and volunteered at church and in the community. She studied and enjoyed interior decorating and design, and had an incredible sense of style and flair. Her favorite thing to do was watch a full moon rise over the beach on Cape Cod. Most of all Sonia enjoyed spending time with her friends and especially her family, with whom she enjoyed many adventures and travels. She will be deeply and forever missed by her loving husband, children, and granddaughter.
In addition to her husband, Michael, Sonia is survived by her son, Andrew Hayward, and his wife Tristen, of Fort Myers; daughter Anne Cahill and her husband, Gerald, of Groton, MA; granddaughter Hayley Cahill of Groton; and several nieces and nephews in England and Argentina. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Margaret Laight; her brother, Charles “Chap” Laight; and her daughter-in-law Elaine Hayward.
Funeral services for Sonia will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 12, 2020 at Iona-Hope Episcopal Church, Hope-Iona Episcopal Church, 9650 Gladiolus Drive, Fort Myers, Florida 33908.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers, FL 33907, 239-936-0555. Online condolences may be made at: www.fortmyersmemorial.com.
