Stanley Eugene (Gene) Longbrake's Obituary
Stanley Eugene (Gene) Longbrake, age 85, of Fort Myers, FL died Monday, February 5, 2018 at the Hope Hospice in Fort Myers, FL. Born, April 17, 1932 to W. Roscoe and C. Lucille Harbour Longbrake, in Rosewood, Ohio. Graduate of Rosewood High School and The Ohio State University (1955, B.S. Business Accounting) where he was a Varsity Baseball Player. In 1976 he received an Executive MBA from the University of Michigan. Married to Nancy (Kreiter) Longbrake for nearly 60 years. Father of three daughters: Karen Longbrake, Kathy Longbrake Barnett and Cindy Longbrake (Jeff) Snyder, Grandfather of four: Matthew (Katie) Longbrake, Connor Barnett, and Justin and Jarod Snyder, Great Grandfather of one: Lily Annette Longbrake. Also survived by brothers Richard (Nancy) Longbrake and Wayne (Kathy) Longbrake. Preceded in death by his sister, Mina Jane Longbrake Barnes.After graduation Gene joined the Republic Steel Company in Massillon, Ohio. He managed several departments eventually becoming Special Assistant to the Executive Vice President of Operations. During his career, Gene served on the boards of business, civic, and philanthropic organizations whose goals were to improve the quality of life in Stark County. These included the Massillon Community Hospital Board, United Way, Junior Achievement, Rotary and the Boys and Girls Club in Massillon, OH. He was Chairman of the Stark County United Way Drive in 1969 and that same year was honored with the Jaycees’s Distinguished Service Award. Following his retirement from Republic Steel, Gene and Nancy moved to Columbia, South Carolina where they resided until 2016. While in South Carolina he was involved with business consulting and served for 10 years as the Chief Financial Officer of the South Carolina Humanities Council. He also volunteered his time and business expertise with the Service Core of Retired Executives (SCORE). He was a Member of Masonic Lodge -Mad River F&AM #161 West Liberty, OH. He loved his Ohio State Buckeyes and was especially proud of the student athletes who were awarded his Endowed Baseball Scholarship. He loved to play golf and was an avid bass fisherman competing in many tournaments during his years in South Carolina.A memorial service will be held at a later date.
