Stavros Nomikos Maillakakis' Obituary
Mr. Stavros N. Maillakakis, son of the late Nomikos Maillakakis and Vakina Maillakakis was born November 15, 1930 in Kalymnos, Greece. He attended and graduated from the High School of Kalymnos. He was born into and remained a devoted Greek Orthodox Christian and passed on the love of the Lord he learned from his parents to his children and grandchildren.Upon completion of high school he worked at the Kalymnos Ice Factory for two years. He left the factory to fulfill his civic duty of serving in the Greek Army. After basic and specialized training he served as a radio operator at the King’s Summer Palace in Tatoi, Greece.After the Army, he moved to Wollongong in New South Wales, Australia. There he worked for the Australian Iron and Steel Company. Initially as an electrical apprentice in the expansion of the Port Kembla plant. After the expansion, he transitioned into production as a crane driver. In his time as crane driver he was recognized for his skill, and in association with the other members of his production shift, consistently met their production goals, and on numerous occasions exceeded them. After working eight years in Australia he moved back to Greece to work with his brother on the construction of three homes for their three sisters.After spending a year in Greece he moved to Nassau, Bahamas and became one of the Floor Managers of the Ponciana Restaurant. After two years he moved to the Nassau Catering Company as an Assistant Manager. After three years he moved to Freeport, Bahamas and became the General Manager of the Grand Bahama Catering Company. He was General Manager for sixteen years, and earned letters of accommodation for his work from both British Airways and Air Canada. While in the Bahamas he was associated with catering for the James Bond movie “Thunderball”, and the Beetles movie “Help!”During his time in the Bahamas he met Francine G. Charron. The two were united in holy matrimony on 10/9/1973. This union was blessed with two children. Also while in the Bahamas Mr. Maillakakis was an active bowler in the local Freeport Bowling League winning many individual and team tournaments. Due to his bowling acumen, in the year 1977 he was invited to join the Professional Bowlers Association tour. He declined the invitation in order to stay close to his family.In 1980 he moved his family from the Bahamas to Fort Myers, FL. Shortly after arrival he became an investor and partner in the Plaka Restaurant located at Time Square on Fort Myers Beach. This restaurant has proudly served Greek and American cuisine for 30 plus years and is well known by many. He retired in 2001 and was succeeded by his son Steven Maillakakis.As a result of his generosity and sage advice, he was loved by many. He quietly departed this life Monday, September 24, 2018 at Health Park Hospital in Fort Myers, Florida. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law George Papageorge, sister Kaliopi Matheous, brother-in-law Dimitrious Matheous, and brother Michaelis Maillakakis.His honorable and God fearing life will forever be cherished in the lives of his children: G. Christopher Hall of Toronto, Canada; Mikes C. Maillakakis and Steven M. Maillakakis both of Fort Myers, FL.; six grandchildren; sister, Nomiki Maillakakis, sister Fotini Papageorge; sister-in-law Evthokia Maillakakis; a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. May his memory be eternal.A Funeral Service for Mr. Maillakakis will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 1, 2018 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 8210 Cypress Lake Drive, Fort Myers, Florida 33919, (239) 481-2099.
