Terrance Allen Matthews' Obituary
Terrance “Terry” Allen Matthews, 73, of Bradenton, Florida, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, in Manatee County, Florida. He was born on February 2, 1953, in Detroit, Michigan, the beloved son of the late Charles and Ella (Martin) Matthews.
Terry was raised in Shelby Township, Michigan, where he built a life grounded in family, faith, and service. In 2021, he relocated to Bradenton, Florida, where he continued to enjoy life surrounded by sunshine, community, and the things he loved most.
A man of strong Christian faith, Terry was a devoted member of River Life Church. He also found great fellowship as a member of the Anna Maria Island Moose Lodge 2188. Known for his warm spirit and generous heart, Terry was always willing to give back. He faithfully supported charitable causes, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, among others.
Terry dedicated over 40 years of his life to education, serving as a teacher within the Utica Community Schools system. His passion for teaching left a lasting impact on countless students and colleagues. Beyond the classroom, he shared his love of sports as a coach for girls’ softball at Stevenson High School, where he inspired teamwork, discipline, and confidence in his players. He held a Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan, an accomplishment he was deeply proud of.
A lifelong Michigander at heart, Terry was an enthusiastic supporter of Michigan sports, especially the Detroit Lions. Whether in good seasons or challenging ones, his loyalty and team spirit never wavered.
Terry will be deeply missed by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of eight years, Charlene (Sweedy) Matthews; his sisters, Karen Burke and her husband Bob of Sterling Heights, Michigan, and Kathleen Tyler of Waterford, Michigan; and his brother, Douglas Matthews and his wife Debbie of Shelby Township, Michigan. He is also survived by his stepchildren, James Walter Rice of Layton, New Jersey, and Michael Edward Rice of Mendham, New Jersey; his seven cherished step-grandchildren; a niece, a grand-niece, and a grand-nephew; along with many beloved cousins and extended family members.
All services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
