Mr. Matthews had a profound effect on my life. He was my teacher at Heritage Junior High and realized that the awkward, geeky student that I was could use some help. He drafted me into an advanced class and even got me to video tape the football team, which, to be honest, was rather mortifying because I could never follow the ball. All these years later I have a son that plays college football and I'll always remember the teacher that noticed me struggling and encouraged me to reach beyond myself. I have to say, all us 7th graders had huge crushes on him for his blue eyes and tan...I am grateful he took the time to really see beyond my camouflage and help me to grow.

I will never forget Terry as my 7th grade Civics teacher at Heritage. I still remember fondly many of his conversations to this day. He will be missed, prayers to all his family and friends.

in 1976 he became my sixth grade teacher and then went on to be my 7th grade my eighth grade my 9th grade my 10th grade teacher. when I left to the Marines I returned to visit him at the school. He was one of the most influential men in my life. There wasn't a year it went in the last 40 I didn't think about him. He taught me not to smoke, drink or do drugs. Whenever tempted I always thought about his guidance and easily resisted. John Springer

"Mr. Matthews" was an excellent junior high teacher who made the extra effort to truly connect with students. He greeted us all with a smile every day. His positive impact on the lives of so many of us stumbling through the awkwardness of adolescence will be remembered.
Somehow he managed to make U.S. History engaging and interesting even to a non-history buff such as myself.

As the news of his passing was shared among my group of friends, we all are remembering him for the caring person he was. He made us feel like we mattered and that our struggles were understood. I am grateful he shared so much of himself with us.
My heart goes out to his family as you process and eventually live with this significant loss.❤️

He was my softball coach at Heritage Junior High. He taught us all "positive mental attitude" is all you need to win. And we did! I have carried that with me through all trials in my life. Our beliefs become reality. Thank you Mr. Matthews. God Bless and RIP ♥️

Terry was a wonderful brother in law but mostly a great friend. We spent a lot of time with him on Christmas breaks visiting Florida. I was proud to attend his teacher of the year ceremony at the Utica School board office. Terry had a great sense of humor with an upbeat personality. As much as I played golf with him, I never shot a lower score. So many times former students would come up to say hello and you could tell the great admiration and respect they had for him. He will be greatly missed. Rest in peace my good friend. Many prayers to follow.
