Virginia Lou Attwood's Obituary
Virginia Lou Attwood of Lehigh Acres, Florida, better known simply as Ginny to her family and friends, passed away peacefully at Coral Trace Health Care in Cape Coral, FL on Thursday, June 16, 2022. She was 90 years old.
Ginny was born on September 27, 1931 in Decatur, Illinois, the beautiful daughter of Ivan & Carrie Grubbs. She met and married Joseph D. Attwood in 1950 and they spent 52 happy years together. She was the last survivor of a family of 8 children. She is survived by her daughter Patricia (Patti Jo) Attwood Hines, 5 grandchildren- Susan Spin, Joseph Elliott, Thomas Hines, Lucas Hines and David Hines. She is also survived by 6 great grandchildren- Gabrielle Spin, Kylie Spin, Haley Hines, Kaiden Hines, Hunter Hines and Orion Thomas Berry.
Ginny and Joe moved from Decatur to Chicago, IL where they lived and worked for several years. Ginny enjoyed the city life where she had Patti Jo and enjoyed going to the horse races, playing volleyball, and taking her nephew to Wrigley Field to watch the Cubs play. She remained a die hard Cub fan until the day she died. Every Thursday night in Chicago she, Joe and Patti Jo would walk across the street for a pizza and bring it back to eat in front of a black & white TV watching Jackie Gleason. Joe played a bugle in a drum & bugle corps and she happily traveled the midwest following him and making lifelong "drum corps" friends.
Joe inherited a motel business upon the death of his mother and when it sold Joe & Ginny moved to Florida and bought Martin's Mobile Home Trailer Park. Together they ran a successful business for eight years in Largo, Florida and upon selling that business they both retired to Cape Coral, Florida in 1974. In Cape Coral they purchased a home for cash for $55,000. While retired Ginny was very active in the community. She loved to bowl and was league secretary for many years. In fact, she was elected to the Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1996. Joe was an active member in the Marine Corps League and Ginny served in the Marine Corps League Auxiliary and was eventually elected State President. She loved working at their "Toys for Tots" event every year.
She was always a Cub fan and after moving to Florida she followed the Dolphins in the NFL plus the Marlins in the MLB. She loved going to the Dog Track in Bonita Springs (she loved it a little too much according to Joe). As her grandchildren came along she taught them how to play poker at the dining room table and was often seen going to high school football games. As her family grew her life began to circle around them more and more. You can see her and her grandkids interacting at her 75th birthday party at the Olive Garden in Fort Myers here https://youtu.be/kkOKwQqms20.
The family is planning a Celebration of Life Service to honor Ginny's life, well-lived on July 2nd, 2022 at Cape Alliance Church (where she volunteered as the Church Secretary) at 2 pm. The address of the Church is: 4307 Skyline Blvd, Cape Coral, FL 33914, (239) 543-7844. Please wear green, it was Ginny's favorite color!
