Walter Albert Shamp Sr. of North Fort Myers, Florida: 98, passed away suddenly on May 31, 2019. Walter is predeceased by his wife of 71 years, Myrtle, and seven brothers and sisters; Charles, Ira, Naomi, Arthur, Lester, Clifford and Elizabeth. Walter is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law; Walter Jr. and Janice Shamp, The Villages, Florida, James and Raelene Shamp, Sumterville, Florida, and one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lou and Bernd Krause, Johnson City, New York, seven grandchildren, Kelly (Eleazar) Flores, David (Sherrylyn) Shamp, Lee Shamp, Darren Shamp, Alex (Aylin) Shamp, Erich (Teagen) Krause, Alyssa (Michael) Micha, eleven great grandchildren, Marcos (Lorraine) Flores, Cody (Ashley) Shamp, Kaelyn Shamp, Jesse Shamp, Logan Shamp, Rasih Shamp, Melia Shamp, Joyanna Krause, Kora Krause, and Franklin Krause, and one great great grandchild, Eli Flores. He is also survived by his longtime friend and companion, Irene Cody Barrett.Walter loved his country and proudly served in the US National Guard and US Army 109th Infantry 28th Division during WWII. He landed on The beach at Normandy, marched in the Liberation of Paris parade, and was wounded on September 13th, 1944, as he and his company broke through enemy lines on the German border. He was a life time member of the VFW, American Legion, and Amvets. At the age of 94, Walter took his Honor Flight with the Collier-Lee Honor Flight Network. He was moved to tears at the reception and recognition by everyone who greeted the flight upon its return home.Walter was employed by IBM Corporation in Endicott, New York for 38 years as a power engineer, until his retirement in 1983. He always enjoyed painting, watching WWE Wrestling, playing cards, and visiting with family, friends and neighbors. He was truly innovative and resourceful, always “building a better mousetrap”.Walter loved his family and will be greatly missed.Dad, we love you, and you will always be our hero.A Visitation for Walter will be held from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Friday, June 7, 2019 inside the Chapel at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Boulevard, Fort Myers, Florida 33907, (239) 936-0555. Military Honors for Walter will be rendered by the United States Army promptly at 12:00 Noon. All are welcome to attend. At the conclusion of the Visitation, Walter will return to New York for Funeral Services and Burial at Vestal Hill Memorial Park.
