Walter John Stobb's Obituary
Walter John Stobb passed away at Joanne’s House Hospice on January 15, 2023 at the age of 81, after an extended illness. Born in New York, NY on May 29, 1941, his family moved from New York to New Jersey, and eventually to Racine, WI.
In Racine, Walter attended St. Catherine’s, where he met his future bride, Jean, when they were freshmen. Walter went on to earn a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Newark College of Engineering, and returned to Racine to join his father’s company, Stobb Inc. He and Jean married and moved to Scotch Plains, NJ, where their daughter Lisa was born. They then moved to Palo Alto, Ca where Walter attended Stanford University for post-graduate work, during which time their son Chip was born. The family returned to New Jersey in 1965, and in 1966, they built the home where they raised three more children, Tony, Alexandra Lynn, and Greg. They remained in their Pittstown home for over 30 years before moving to the Naples/Ft. Myers area.
Walter was proud to hold 26 patents for machinery related to the printing industry, from pre- to post-press applications. Well before its time, he saw automation as the key to efficiency in the industry. Much of the equipment he developed and created is still in use today or has been incorporated into current designs.
Walter had many interests over the years including cooking, golf, fly and deep-sea fishing and boating. Walter and Jean loved travelling the world from Europe to Asia, for both business and pleasure. They loved entertaining - their Pittstown Christmas parties were legendary!
Above all, he loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. However, he really didn’t like about 99% of the people who will read this 😊
Walter was predeceased by his parents, Anton & Elizabeth (Dudda), his brother Rudolph and sister Margaret, and their oldest child Lisa (Keith) Pacifico. He is survived by his wife Jean (Herdt) and their children Chip (Ann-Marie), Tony (Kathy), Alex (Steve) Walser and Greg (Melissa), their 15 grandchildren, Victoria (Paul), Anthony, Samantha, Annette, Michael, Gianna, Gabrielle, Dallas, Montgomery (Samantha), Kylee, Sydney, Kendall, Luke, Shepard & Griffin, as well as four great-grandchildren, Lisa Marie, Ezra, Theodore and Cameron.
In lieu of flowers or cards, please consider donations to his favorite charity which helps orphans and others get back to living a “normal” life.
