Walter Thomas ZuroskiMarch 20, 2013Walter Thomas Zuroski of Fort Myers passed away peacefully on March 20, 2013. Mr. Zuroski was born in Pennsylvania on December 21, 1920 to Charles and Katherine Zuroski and grew up in Johnsonburg, Pennsylvania. He and his three brothers served during World War II and all survived to return home. After the war, he met his wife Margaret Young while at Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania and they married in 1948. After a stint teaching in the Johnsonburg High School, he moved his family to Fort Myers, FL in the early 1950s.He taught in the Lee County schools and spent time as Assistant Superintendent but preferred direct involvement with pupils. He served the last two decades of his career as the Principal of Orangewood Elementary. Twenty years after he retired, it was still common for him to be greeted warmly – “Hello, Mr. Z.” – by people who had passed through Orangewood during his tenure as Principal.Walter Zuroski played a formative role in the development of Lee County and its educational institutions. He will be warmly remembered for his public service as an educator, dedication to his family, and his mischievous sense of humor that so delighted his children, grandchildren and countless pupils. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, to whom he was married for 65 years, sisters, Helen and Genevieve, three daughters, Maureen, Kathleen and Kristeen, and four grandchildren. There will be a viewing at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens from 6-8 pm on Friday evening, March 22 and a memorial mass at the Church of the Resurrection of our Lord on Cypress Lake Drive at 11.30 am on Saturday, March 23. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Walter’s memory may be sent to Hope Hospice, 9470 HealthPark Circle, Fort Myers, FL 33908.
