Webster B. Armstrong, III.'s Obituary
Webster B. Armstrong, III., 89 , of North Fort Myers, passed away Saturday, May 16, 2020. He was born January 25, 1931 in Savannah, GA to Webster B. and Ann Elizabeth Semkens Armstrong, II. The oldest of nine siblings, he went to work on his Dad's shrimp boat at the age of 14 which began his lifelong love of being on the water.
Webbie came to Fort Myers in 1946 as a shrimper, he always said "Fort Myers was the most beautiful place he had ever seen." In 1951, he married June Cardullo, his wife of fifty years and entered and served in the United States Marine Corps from 1952-'54. After working jobs that were just putting food on the table, he came across an add in he paper for Oversees Motors in Fort Myers. They hired him and sent him to school in Jacksonville, FL for three weeks to learn the Volkswagen from one end to the other. He worked for Oversees for a few years and then opened Webbie's Garage on Michigan Ave in the early sixties. By the early seventies he was ready to be back out on the water again and had a sixty foot steel hull shrimp boat built in Palatka, FL that he named the June Gail. He moved his family to a small town on the east coast, Darien, GA and continued shrimping for the next several years. He brought his family back to Fort Myers in the mid eighties and he worked as a mechanic at Lochmoor Country Club in North Fort Myers. His retirement job was working at Cape, Tool and Tackle repairing reels.
Webbie's love of being on the water had him fishing nearly every weekend catching fish for the fish fries that took place on his birthday and Father's Day. He loved gardening, cooking, baseball, music and within the last 10 yrs of his life he taught himself to play the guitar. He told stories of old times with such flair that would have you doubled over with laughter. Most of all he loved the Lord and everything he did in life was for his family. He truly believed that his legacy was the ones he left behind.
He is survived by his children Ben Armstrong, Tim Armstrong (Pam), Bruce Armstrong (Julie), Elizabeth Kilcoyne (Dennis) and Gail Hipkins (Ken). He is also survived by his siblings Jimmy Armstrong, Helen Pagan, Russell Armstrong, Janice Sparks, Pamela Coleman, Lois Shuck, sixteen grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
