Wendell Harrison Leigh's Obituary
Wendell Harrison Leigh began his eternal, heavenly life with his lord and savior, Jesus Christ, early in the day “before the cows woke up” April 1, 2020.
He leaves behind his loving family: the love of his life, wife of 67 years, Julia; children – Debra Leigh, Tim Leigh (Lorie), Melody Melvin (Jack), and Twyla Leigh; grandchildren – Harmony Melvin Nunley (Robby), Keith Sri Barefoot (Jen), Benjamin Melvin (Amanda), Joel Garland, Nate Garland and Katie Leigh; great grandchildren – Isabella Melvin, Rex Nunley, Max Nunley, Lili Barefoot, Fox Nunley and Phoenix Nunley.
Preceded in death by parents Alfred Lawrence Leigh and Catherine Leigh, brothers Charles “Duke” Leigh and James “Jim” Leigh and sister Anna Elizabeth “Liz” Gallagher.
Growing up on a dairy farm in Fairfax County Virginia, he was an early riser and hard worker. Wendell was delighted and grateful to live in Fort Myers, his home of choice for almost seven decades. Wendell was a WWII veteran, having served in the US Coast Guard immediately following high school. He truly was a member of the Greatest Generation.
Some of his outstanding attributes include a keen wit, words of wisdom at just the right time, selfless service, compassion, dedication to family, and generosity that set him apart as an exemplary human being. Wendell was a great story teller, never met a stranger and remembered all those who came across his path. He often greeted a whole restaurant of people (one by one) before he reached his table.
Wendell was owner/operator of Wendell Leigh Electric Service for over 30 years, a legacy his son Tim has continued for over 25 years. His was a talented problem solver and could fix just about anything with his mechanical and engineering abilities. In his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking and supporting Julia in her projects and interests.
Even with life’s physical challenges that rendered him bedbound and unable to speak these last few years, Wendell was a tower of quiet strength, had a smile that lit up the room, loved celebrations at the family home, never complained and was the best hand holder ever.
Wendell was grateful to all who assisted with his home healthcare and life needs. His well lived and blessed life shines as an example of grace, humility, perseverance, and amazing contentment. Wendell’s memory will live on through the love, faith and laughter of family and friends. A Private Graveside Service for Wendell will be celebrated on Friday, April 3, 2020 at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 1589 Colonial Boulevard, Fort Myers, Florida 33907, (239) 936-0555.
“Well done my good and faithful servant”. Matthew 25:21
