William Frederick Caraher Jr.'s Obituary
William Frederick Caraher, Jr. died April 21, 2026 in Fort Myers Florida. He was 86 years old.
Fred, as he was called, was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, went to Thomas Jefferson High School where he participated in ROTC, and, like his father, attended college at Pennsylvania State University. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1962, and in 1964 he joined E.I. duPont de Nemours and Company in Wilmington, Delaware, where he worked until retiring in 2000. He worked in the Scientific Computing Division on information technology and networking. He installed the first fiber optic network at the Experimental Station, duPont’s largest research site. Both he and his father had patents with duPont.
He was a loving husband and father who religiously attended his children’s events. This included band concerts, graduations, school events, and lectures. He served as the board President for Team Delaware, his sons’ swim club. He drove his sons to countless swim practices, and attended endless swim meets to watch his sons compete for only a few minutes.
His passions were photography and travel, and his house is filled with beautiful pictures of his trips. He loved to take pictures of flowers, and for years produced a calendar of flower pictures for friends and family.
He was active in the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant in Wilmington, where he sang in the choir and was a superintendent of the Sunday School. He will be lovingly remembered for his goofy jokes and his ability to talk to anyone anywhere at any time.
He is survived by his wife Nancy, his children Bill, Joe, and Fritz, daughter in law Susie, and grandsons Sam and Hunter.
His memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 29 at Covenant Presbyterian Church 2439 MacGregor Blvd, Ft. Myers, FL 33901. His service can be livestreamed by visiting https://covpcfm.com/covenant/
