Debbie and I met Bill and Ethel at a New Year's Eve party at Rick and Liz Covert's home in St. Croix. The next day we returned to the Covert's to watch Auburn vs. Penn State in a bowl game. Ethel, sporting a cast, would start pacing around whenever Auburn made a good play. If I remember correctly, Penn State prevailed in the end. Meanwhile Bill and I were conversing about football when he mentioned he had Penn State season tickets and ask if Debbie and I would like to attend a game in the fall. I didn't hesitate and immediately accepted. I'm assuming he was serious and not just being nice. He pulled a card out of his wallet that had the fall schedule and ask me to pick a game. Not to take advantage and select a big game, say Michigan, etc., I picked the Louisville game. So it was, that fall Bill picked us up at the Baltimore airport and drove us to their lakefront home in Pennsylvania. That afternoon we cruised the lake in their pontoon boat. That night we watched Vanderbilt obtain a "moral victory" on TV by not being blown out by Notre Dame. I made a batch of gumbo for tailgating at the Penn State game the next day. The last day they took us to the Gettysburg battlefield. All in all it was a grand trip. What a fun couple Bill and Ethel were. It's easy to see how Liz leaned to be a great host and entertainer. I think of Bill and Ethel fondly often, especially during football season. Peace be with you, Joe Cummings
Bill and Ethel were are neighbors for many years on Sanibel really missed them both. I used to love to go next door and visit after a day at work. And Bill would always have a interesting story to tell me as he and Ethel would hold hands on the sofa. Bill will be truly missed a wonderful man.
