On behalf of Charlie Markland:
1974-1976 PBJC Dental Laboratory Technician Class
Besides the camaraderie with our classmates during the Dental Lab Tech program at Palm Beach Junior College, and the years of continuing study that followed, leading toward our certifications, Tony and I would spend considerable time on our phones keeping up with our personal lives and the latest trends in the trade, and trying to sort out the plethora of issues that haunted our profession. One evening, I was listening to my local 5000Watt radio station, WHEE 1370AM in Martinsville, VA, when Tony called. The station had recently become an “Americana” format and the owner, Mr.Bill Wyatt, was taking song requests. I asked Tony to join in some mischief with me and, after disclosing the scheme with him and describing the station’s program, had him call in using his second line and request a song. Tony called and asked for something by Bonnie Raitt, after which Bill began to gather some info about his caller. When Bill asked “Where you calling from Tony?”, and Tony drolly said, “Fort Myers”, the surprise in Bill’s voice was evident…”FORT MYERS FLORIDA?”, to which Tony innocently replied, in his slight Southern accent, “Yeah, I must be picking you up on the skip”. Bill was dumbfounded, and continued to probe Tony for more information, asking “What do you do for a living Tony?”. When Tony calmly replied,” I’m a Dental Technician”, the short radio silence was deafening until Bill, now obviously catching on to the ploy, and knowing he’d been had, and, with a voice a bit more raised, says, “You don’t know Charlie Markland, do you? Well, the cat was out of the bag, and a fun time was had by all…and I have it all on tape, somewhere. Thanks Tony, and Bill, for the good times, you helped make life a little easier. Gonna miss you buddy!
