Charlie was a great union man, an incredibly hard worker and a tremendous Instructor with a kind heart. He helped build the Steamfitters' Training Center in so many ways and has taught so many Steamfitters. I was one of his students. As an apprentice I learned much from Charlie and am thankful for his great teaching and thoughtful encouragement. Today, I am an Instructor at the Training Center. When I teach the Apprentices and Journeyworkers, I tell them that I stand on Charlie' s shoulders. Local 638 has gained much from Charlie's contributions. May he rest in peace. I will miss him dearly!

I met Charlie in 1999 at the United Association Instructor Training Program. I was assigned to co-teach the Hydronic Heating and Cooling Class with him. I never had so much fun in my life as I had teaching that class with Charlie. At the end of the week in Ann Arbor, my gal Jill and I dined with Charlie and the crew from Local 638 at the Max and Irma's. The fellows from 638 told the waitress that Charlie and I were twins and that it was our birthday. We both laughed and laughed as we ate our free deserts. There were quite a few funny moments in the class room, too. Like when Charlie busted me for drawing on the white board with permanent marker. Or the day I nodded off while he was lecturing. I was always amazed by that soft spoken voice with which he commanded the attention of the class. Everybody paid attention. He knew a lot and freely shared that knowledge. It breaks my heart that the world has lost this truly fine gentleman. He was the consummate instructor. His contributions to Local 638 and to the United Association will continue to improve the skills of thousands of UA members across the United States and Canada.
