Dean M. Heflin's Obituary
Dean M. Heflin passed away at his home on Monday, May 1, 2023. He was an eighth generation descendant of Charles Pageant Heflin born at Jamestown, VA in 1655.
Dean and his siblings were brought to rural Glades County by his parents, Jacob and Hazel Heflin, April 12, 1939. On January 1, 1956, he married Barbara Wilson at the First Methodist Church in Sebring and they enjoyed 67 years together. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, two daughters, Deborah Maurer (Scott) and Deanna Gordon, three grandchildren Dean Thomas Gordon, Tatiana Maurer and Alexander Maurer, a sister, Lois Blount of Clewiston and a brother, Bill Heflin of Ortona and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sister, Jeanne Thomas, brother, Glenn Heflin and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Anne Maurer.
During the early 50s, Dean served his country during the Korean Conflict as a Demolition Specialist with the 1402nd Combat Engineers Battalion in the European Command. He received his registration as a Florida Professional Engineer July 20, 1965. He was employed by the Florida Department of Transportation for more than 43 years, retiring as a Professional Engineer Administrator. Following retirement from the State, he spent the next ten years with Aim Engineering as a Project Coordinator.
Highlighting his transportation career was recognition for 25 years of meritorious service at the Annual Convention of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials in Seattle, Washington, October 13, 1985. He was also recipient of Florida Department of Transportation’s Bill Gartner Award in 1990-91 for his individual accomplishments and contributions to transportation in District One. He was a former member of the Florida Engineering Society, the National Society of Professional Engineers and served as president of the Calusa Chapter, Florida Engineering Society 1969-70.
Dean was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church for over 51 years and served on the Board of Deacons and chair of the Finance Committee for several years. He and his wife have also been residents of the Fort Myers Historic Seminole Park since its inception.
A Memorial Service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 11:00 AM followed by a reception in Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church - Dean Heflin Memorial Fund or a charity of the donor’s choice.
