Gerald Edwin Shampo's Obituary
Gerald Edwin Shampo, 90, passed away July 25, 2011. He was born May 15, 1921 in Amherst, Massachusetts to the late Grant and Gertrude (Blair) Shampo. ?á In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Marjorie (Cady), sister Dorothy Winslow; brothers, Kenneth and Donald “Bud” Shampo. Jerry was a graduate of Atlantic Union College in So. Lancaster, MA. He was the director of the Children’s Homes in Dobbs Ferry and Kingston, NY, where he positively influenced the lives of scores of teens, the administrator of Fuller Memorial Hospital in So. Attleboro, MA, and Vice-President of Adventist Health Systems North in Hinsdale, IL, where he served as board chairman of numerous hospitals. He was a past president of the Rotary Club of Kingston, New York. ?á He moved to Lee County in 1987 from Burr Ridge, IL and was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church of Fort Myers. ?á Jerry served our country in the US Army during WWII. He was a Sgt. and served in both the European and Pacific Theaters and in Japan during the Occupation. ?á He loved New England sports; Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins. He played piano by ear, was a collector of antiques, and loved his grandchildren very much. Jerry loved all the birds of SWFL, but particularly cardinals and “Big Bird,” the great blue heron who frequented his backyard. Jerry loved serving others, feared God and loved Jesus, in whom he had an abiding faith and always strove to place his body, mind, heart, and soul in service to God, and to be harmonious, well-balanced, cheerful and true. In all these things he was immensely successful. He is survived by his daughter, Susan Shampo of Brookings, Oregon; son, G. Christopher Shampo of Camino, California; sister, Doris Shampo of Hagerstown, Maryland; grandchildren, Julia Rochelle Shampo and Jackson Christopher Shampo, and numerous nieces and nephews. ?áThere will be a visitation on Friday, July 29, 2011 from 10 to 11:00 AM at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home.
