Gladys Davis' Obituary
Gladys W. Davis, 93, of Ft. Myers passed away Monday, August 23, 2010. Born in Barbourville, KY, Gladys retired as a teacher after 46 years in education. In the early years of her teaching career, Gladys taught in a 3 room school house in Bell County, KY where she taught 7 thru 12th grade. She was the Principal, teacher and basketball coach all at once. Her responsibilities included checking the coal stove in the morning to keep her students warm. Gladys enjoyed bridge but had a passion for golf where she excelled with a 7 handicap into her 90s. She was a competitive golfer with many club championships to her credit. She also traveled extensively but her greatest love was reserved for grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gladys is survived by her loving daughter Joyce (Bill) Hellard-Siegmeister of Miami, FL; sister Marilee (Victor) Kendall of Detroit, MI; 2 grandchildren Dr. Robert Scott (Laura) Hellard of Decatur, AL and Michelle Lynn (Josh) Leonard of Metairie, LA; 4 great-grandchildren Eleanor, Charlie, Justin and Eric. Gladys is preceded in death by her beloved husband Hubert W. Davis and siblings Walter S. Woolum and Irene Poshlman. A visitation will be held on Friday, August 27, 2010 between the hours of 10-12 PM at Ft. Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home with service and entombment to follow.
