My Aunt Helen, part of every Thanksgiving and Christmas family dinner for over 50 years. An apron around the waist of her petite frame, she fussed over the turkey and mashed potatoes with her kitchen crew of mother in law, sister in law, daughters and niece. My mother brought the pies. True midwesterners, we had dinner for many years about 1:00 pm and then unbelievably , a snack of turkey sandwiches and angel food cake around 5:00! Years later, when Helen and Uncle Leonard lived in Florida near my parents, fish dinners were added to the mealtime gatherings. Helen baked the best biscuits to compliment the catch of the day. Helen enjoyed the simple life. Always thrilled to see my husband and I on our annual visit to the “Florida Futheys” , we took her to the beach on Sanibel Island this past April. She sang and marveled at the wind surfers and giggled when we texted a photo of us to surprise Doreen and Janet. There will be so many things I will miss about my tiny aunt as I say goodbye to someone that knew me all my life.
