Herbert Franklin Dorsett's Obituary
Herbert Franklin Dorsett, 82, of Fort Myers, passed away Thursday, November 12, 2015. He was born October 21, 1933 in Branford, FL and has been a lifelong Florida resident. He moved to Fort Myers from Port Charlotte in 1981. He was the CEO of Southwest Regional Medical Center and the founder of Gulf Coast Medical Center. Prior to that, he was the CEO of Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte. He was elected as Chairman of the Florida Hospital Association in 1985. He served as President of the Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce, member of the board of directors of the Charlotte County YMCA and Port Charlotte Cultural Center. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Fort Myers, a member of the Port Charlotte Rotary Club, and past president of the Rotary Club of Fort Myers. Major Dorsett proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Herb lived his life by the Four Way Test; he will be remembered for his caring ways and that gorgeous SMILE. Mr. Dorsett is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Mary Ellen Dorsett; his children: Jerry Dorsett (wife Juanita, grandchildren Chris and Dianna), Carol Lefton (husband Jeff, grandchildren Lindsey and Jordan), Jon Dorsett (wife Michelle, step-grandchildren Matthew and Jacque Selig; great grandson Boston Selig), Andrew Dorsett (wife Kelly, grandchildren Paul, Hannah and Cole), Johanna Whelan (husband Johnny and granddaughter Dakota); and step-daughter Sandra Lee Callahan (husband Joe, grandsons James and John). A celebration of Mr. Dorsett’s life will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at Life Church, 11735 Plantation Road, Fort Myers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Harry Chapin Food Bank in Mr. Dorsett’s memory.
