James Patrick "Pat" Maharrey's Obituary
James Patrick Maharrey, better known simply as “Pat” by his family and friends, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, at his residence on Friday February 21, 2020. He was 76 years old.
Pat was born in Fort Myers, Florida to Harriet Wilcox (Goodman) and Joseph Walton Maharrey. He spent his career in law enforcement serving his hometown as a member of the Fort Myers Police Department, beginning October 12, 1966 through January 31, 1998 retiring at the rank of Sergeant. He was married to and leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Vickie Lynn (Harper) Maharrey.
A few of Pat’s many life’s accomplishments were: He was awarded the Governor’s Twenty which recognized him as the top target shooter of Florida.
Pat was instrumental in establishing the Fort Myers Police Department Underwater Dive Team. He was instructor to many search and rescue operations.
Finalization of the FMPD gun range in 1974 was completed with Pat’s many hours of expertise. He also served as a fire arm instructor.
Many others, to name a few were, being a member of the hostage negotiations department with the FMPD. Sat on the Civil service board of Lee County. Trained at The Smith and Wesson Gun Company and was qualified to do service on police firearms.
Pat’s enjoyment in life came from spending time on the water with fishing, cast netting, and air boating. Also many hours of flying airplanes and helicopters were a favorite.
Family and friends remember Pat as barefooted and quick witted. He was known for his many fun pranks and jokes that were always taken in great humor.
Pat is survived by his wife Vickie Maharrey, his brother Byron Maharrey
(Dianne), brother in-law James Harper and sister in-law Martha Hillman (Bill) and many nieces and nephews. He felt great affection for his neighbors and many friends.
Preceded in death by his parents and his brother Joseph T. Maharrey.
At Pat’s request there will be no formal funeral services. A casual Celebration of Life will be held in his honor on Saturday, November 14, 2020 service starts at 2:00pm - 4:00pm at the Edison Restaurant 3583 McGregor Blvd. Fort Myers, Florida 33901.
