John Williams Burns' Obituary
John William Burns did not just live his 67 years; he drove them with purpose, fueled by an unwavering love for his family and an enduring dedication to his country. On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the engines quieted as John passed away peacefully at Cape Coral Hospital.
Born on February 19, 1959, in Evansville, Indiana, to the late Carl and Thelma Louise (Groves) Burns, John was raised in a bustling household. Growing up as one of 13 children instilled in him a profound, lifelong sense of family.
For 23 years, John proudly wore the uniform of the United States Army, a career defined not just by the time he served, but by the lives he touched. From the shifting sands of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm to outposts across the globe, John was the reliable engine that kept his fellow soldiers moving forward. Rising to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3, he led from the front with a rare blend of quiet authority and genuine empathy. Even while deployed, his mind remained in motion, earning an associate’s degree that reflected his lifelong drive to better himself.
Though his military career and long hauls sent him around the world, John’s internal GPS always pointed toward home. After retiring, his journey took him from Fort Myers to Crestview, and across the Pacific to Hawaii, before he finally parked his rig and made Cape Coral his permanent home base eight years ago. To know John was to instantly have a friend. He possessed the rare, remarkable gift of bridging gaps with a warm handshake and an easy smile—a man who truly never met a stranger on the road of life.
A force in constant motion, John was as dependable as the classic engines he loved to rebuild. Whether he was turning wrenches in the garage, fine-tuning a motor, kicking up dust on a four-wheeler, or passionately following the races, his energy was infectious. Yet, his absolute favorite place to be was on the sidelines. He was the booming, encouraging voice coaching his children’s sports teams, a role he seamlessly carried into his later years as the ultimate fan of his grandson Beau’s football pursuits.
Above all, he built a beautiful life alongside his beloved wife of 45 years, Caroline (Grunig) Burns. He was a deeply protective and proud father to Jeremy Burns of Cape Coral, FL; Jimmy (Esther) Burns of Tallahassee, FL; Jeffery (Aung) Burns of Crestview, FL; and Rebecca Burns (Mike Elkins) of Cape Coral, FL. Of all the titles and ranks he earned, "Papaw" was perhaps his favorite, fiercely treasured by his grandchildren: Kaliana, Alana, Arianna, Annika, Beau, Charlie, Grant, Lidia, and Lucie. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Emma Montani of Greenfield, IN, and Debbie Stearley of St. Augustine, FL. He now joins his parents and 10 of his siblings in eternal rest.
We will gather to celebrate the remarkable miles John traveled on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers, Florida. Family and friends are invited to gather for a visitation beginning at 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
Military honors and entombment will follow.
John’s legacy of service, kindness, and unwavering love for his family will be remembered always by those whose lives he touched
