John Michael Kays' Obituary
John Michael Kays, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend bid his earthly adieu and ascended on Ash Wednesday 2024 at the age of 83. Born to Harold and Anna Mae Kays and growing up in Edwardsville, IL, John's journey through life was a symphony of achievements and “Let’s Go” adventures that spanned the oceans and touched the hearts of many.
John's early years were marked by a love of sports, excelling in baseball and football, earning him a football scholarship to the prestigious Northwestern University playing under Hall of Famer, Ara Parseghian. Graduating from the Kellogg School of Management with a minor in Theology, John's academic prowess was complemented by his commitment to the Sigma Chi Fraternity brotherhood, a bond he cherished for a lifetime and passed to his sons and "now his brothers.”
"Hollywood Handsome" with a charisma that could light up a room, John briefly ventured into modeling, gracing billboards across Chicago and catalogues nationally. However, destiny called him to serve his country, leading him to join the Navy, where he sailed the Seven Seas as a gunnery officer on the destroyer USS Jonas Ingram DD-938. His naval service instilled in him a love of the sea and an unwavering passion for the land and country he served.
After the Navy, John embarked on a 35.5-year journey with 3M, earning the moniker "Big Typhoon" as he traversed the globe, bringing sandpaper to the farthest corners. His leadership and drive were crucial in the creation of the new Micro-Abrasives Division that has fueled the growth of our modern internet- powered era. From Florida to New York, from Illinois to Oklahoma, from Minnesota to California, John's career was as diverse as the friendships he cultivated, especially at the White Bear Yacht Club in Dellwood, MN, where he anchored his life in camaraderie, golf, tennis, cross country skiing and the occasional wood chopping session.
A lover of music, John's banjo skills were showcased in various forums, including the Buffalo Banjo Band. His musical tastes were eclectic, from building his own 'Gut Bucket' to singing "The Impossible Dream"; to dancing, and marching friends and family around their home to the "Saints Go Marching In."
Retirement beckoned, leading John to his "new home" in Florida. He revisited the coastal waters on his Albin 28' aptly named "Let's Go". "Let's Go" succinctly defined the core of the man, his driving force. His love for Key West, cultivated during his Navy days, became a frequent escape. Stays at the Curry Mansion, long walks on Duval Street and dining well only added joy to his retirement rhythm.
John's thirst for new adventures was unquenchable. Cunard Cruise line opened up new worlds for him to explore along with meaningful land adventures. A Master Captain certification, volunteer work with the Cape Coral Police, and
Robert Service-inspired camping trips to the Yukon and Alaska reflected John's zest for life.
As a big brother to "Kev," John's bond was unbreakable, marked by laughter, and unwavering support. Known as "KZ" to many, he was a loving father to John Jr., Jeff, and Karen, embracing his role as "Papa" to 11 grandchildren with enthusiasm, sharing in their educational, musical, and sporting adventures.
Yet, the true pinnacle of John Kays' life was his 61-year marriage to his college sweetheart Judy, a love that transcended time and space. Together, they illuminated the world with their adventures, showcasing a love that stood as a testament to the Divine.
John Michael Kays has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him. As we bid him farewell, we celebrate a life well-lived, rich with love, laughter, and the everlasting echoes of the "Saints Go Marching In." May his “Let’s Go” spirit continue to guide us, just as his light will forever shine in our memories.
John will be laid to rest in a National Cemetery later this year. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Heart Association or Alzheimer’s Association.
