Maureen Rita Smith's Obituary
Maureen Rita (Mahoney) Smith, a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on May 26, 2025, at the age of 89. Born in Greenport, NY to Florence and Francis Mahoney, Maureen was raised in Mattituck, NY along with her older brother, Francis. After graduating from Mattituck High School, which she attended with her best friends Bert and Dotty, who later became her sister-in-law, she was proud to work for a local insurance company in Riverhead, NY.
She met the love of her life, Douglas A. Smith, and they were blessed with five children. Married for 63 years, they made their homes in Seattle, WA, Rochester, NY, Lincroft, NJ, Oyster Bay and Baiting Hollow, NY, as well as Jensen Beach and Ft. Myers, FL.
For their honeymoon, they drove across country to Seattle, where Maureen remained while Doug served arctic tours with the United States Navy. Being a military wife so far from family required a lot of courage as well as a sense of adventure. She made many sacrifices for the good of her family.
Maureen’s greatest joy was raising their children, and seeing them grow up to be loving, kind people. She enjoyed traveling to visit everyone. She was so proud of her grandchildren and always wanted to know what their latest accomplishments and adventures were. She enjoyed attending their recitals, plays, and sports events. She was always thinking about her family. Warm and welcoming, Maureen loved hosting parties for family and friends.
Maureen and Doug always lived near the water and enjoyed many years boating with their lifelong friends Fred and Dorothy, Bob and Flo, and Andre and Ginny, and of course Salty Dog, the family beagle. She learned to play golf later in life and enjoyed it for many years. Quite the artist, she enjoyed ceramics and painting and used her knowledge of the color palette in her garden. She was always humble about her talents.
Maureen was always available to lend a helping hand to whomever needed one. She had a strong faith and enjoyed working at St. Dominic Parish Office in Oyster Bay. In addition to being a Eucharistic Minister along with Doug at St. Martin de Porres Church in Jensen Beach, she visited homebound seniors and nursing homes regularly.
Maureen was predeceased by her loving husband Doug, and family members: Florence, Francis, Viola, Charles, Francis Jr., Ellen, Paul, Doris, Laurence F., Laurence C., Herbert, Shirley, John, Dorothy, Dolores, and Joe, and many other cherished relatives and very dear friends.
She is survived by her loving children: Douglas, Jr. (Kathy), Scott, Sharon (Matthew), Terence (Yasemin), and Heather; grandchildren: Matt, Doug, Emily, Kate, Sarah, Terence and Hannah; brothers-in -law: Gilbert and Richard; and many nieces and nephews.
Maureen will live in our hearts forever, and we look forward to being together again. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Hope Hospice at https://hopehospice.org/ or to the charity of your choice. Services will be private.
