Maynard W. Matz, 96 of Fort Myers, FL, died January 7, 2016 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers. Funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Friday, January 22, 2016 at the Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Blvd, Fort Myers, FL 33907. Family will gather with friends one hour prior to service time. Entombment will be at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Maynard was born Nov 13, 1919 in Fairfield County, OH, the son of, John R. and Hester G. (Peters) Matz. He was a WWII veteran of the US Army. On August 1, 1941, Maynard married, Alice M. Huffer, the love of his life of 74 years. The Matz family moved to Fort Myers from Brookville, Ohio, in 1958, when Maynard accepted a position at Inter-County Telephone Company. Maynard retired from a 21 year career at the City of Fort Myers as City Clerk – Finance Director from 1969 to 1990. He was highly regarded for his exceptional finance skills, his uncompromising ethics, and superior problem solving abilities. Under his guidance and foresight, he established the City of Fort Myers Non-Uniformed Employees Retirement Plan. He was instrumental in progressive City projects that included Centennial Park, a new Water Plant, Sewer Plant, Eastwood Golf Course, Harborside Convention Center, Shady Oaks Community Center, City Hall. Maynard was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, was a 33 degree member of Masonic Lodge #56, Scottish Rite, ARABA Shrine and the High 12 Club Lodge #423. Surviving are his wife Alice; his children Karen E. Dearen and her husband Robert of Coral Springs, Linda J. Johnston and her husband James of New Smyrna Beach, FL, John W. Matz and his wife Jean of Cape Haze, FL, Mary Ann Couris and her husband John of Los Angeles, CA; sister Betty Ann Heise of Amanda, OH; seven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Hazel, Martha and brothers, Paul, Neal and Bernard. The Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of Maynard.
