R. Douglas Hovenden's Obituary
Roland “Douglas” Hovenden, age 80, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2019 at his home on Fort Myers Beach, FL. Doug was born August 31, 1938 in Shenandoah, Iowa, to the late Roland Cavour and Berniece Margaret (VanWyngarden) Hovenden. He attended Shenandoah schools and upon graduation attended Southwest Missouri State University until his transfer to Iowa State University where he graduated January 1962. He began his teaching career in Graettinger, Iowa as a Vocational Agricultural Instructor, and continued his teaching in Grinnell, Iowa 1964-1966. He joined DeKalb Genetics as a District Manager in 1966, moving to Monticello, IA, St. Cloud, MN, Rochester, IN, Grinnell, IA, and finally to Bloomington, IL 1981-1999 as a Regional Manager.Doug was active throughout his years in the United Methodist Church serving as liturgist, MYF counselor and Sunday School teacher. He was President of the Iowa Association of Swim Clubs and officiated many meets throughout the state. He had fond memories of attending Boys State and singing in a quartet with the Everlv Brothers in Shenandoah. Helping others and being a good husband, father, grandfather and friend were definitely at the top of his list…he was loved by many.Doug is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathie Lou (Rodgers) Hovenden of Knoxville, IA and their three children, Kayla Karee (Douglas) Hill of Skaneateles, NY, Todd Douglas (Claudia) Hovenden, Bloomington, IL. and Jodi Janee (Steven) Sackel of Williamsville, NY. Grandchildren, Drake Douglas Hill, New Brighton, MN, Katherine Karee Hill, Denver, CO., Connor Simpson Hill, Taylor Janee Hill, Max Douglas Hovenden, Dallas, TX, Gabriella Adriana Hovenden, Cole Siersci Sackel, Cooper Douglas Sackel and Olivia Katherine Sackel, two brothers William Edwin (Valerie) Hovenden of Gallatin, TN, Robert Alan (Jane) Hovenden, San Antonio, TX and one sister Donna Karee Henshaw of Kansas City, MO. His family, together with a host of friends, will miss this special man so full of love and compassion.A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 11 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church in Bloomington, IL.
