Salvatore S. Listro's Obituary
Salvatore (Sonny) Listro of Estero, Florida passed away on September 9, 2016 at Joanne’s House Hope Hospice in Bonita Springs Florida. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut on August 3, 1930, the first born son of Sebastian (Sam) and Mary Listro.Sal attended Commercial High School where he played football and baseball for three years and was named the Outstanding Men’s Scholar Athlete. He was elected captain of the 1947 football team. On the baseball team he hit the longest home run that was estimated to travel more than 500 feet. The newsman heralded the feat in banner headlines. Walt Munson, the nationally syndicated cartoonist, depicted the drama with an historic sketch. Upon graduating in 1948, Sal attended Southern Connecticut State College and Stone College where he received a degree in business.Sal was a veteran of the Korean War. After completing his two years in the Army, Sal joined the New Haven Police Department, where he served for 28 years attaining the rank of Sergeant. He received 28 commendations for outstanding achievements. He was personally commended by the director of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover, after he single-handedly captured a fleeing felon following a bank robbery with a bone crushing tackle. In 1998, Sal was inducted into the New Haven Football Gridiron Club, and was honored as Man of the Year in 2006, in recognition of his dedicated service to the community.In 1981, Sal moved to Florida and lived in Stoneybrook Estero for the last 17 years. He joined the Publix Super Market grocery chain where he worked for over 20 years. Sal donated over 15 gallons of blood to the Red Cross, volunteered at Pine Woods Elementary School in Estero and coached little league baseball.He leaves behind his four daughters, Linda, Lauren, Gail, and Michele and one son Stephen; 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers, Santo (Maureen) of Estero, Florida, John (Barbara) of Woodbridge, Connecticut and Richard (Dolores) of East Haven Connecticut; two sisters Marie (Fred) Acquavita of Hamden, Connecticut and Carol (Vaughn) Maher of Fort Myers, Florida; aunt Elaine Aspland of Guilford Connecticut, and one dearest uncle John (Dee) Gallucci of East Haven, Connecticut and many nieces and nephews.A Memorial Service for Sal will be celebrated at 9:00 AM on Monday, September 19, 2016 inside the Chapel at Joanne’s House at Hope Hospice, 27200 Imperial Parkway, Bonita Springs, Florida 34135, (855) 454-3104.
