Susan Lloyd Shoemaker's Obituary
Susan Lloyd Shoemaker, an honored educator in the Lee County schools, died August 7, 2011 at her home in Alva.?á She was 69.?á Susan devoted her life to giving children and youth a strong foundation.?á Her efforts won her a number of awards, but Susan measured her success by the scores of young lives she changed.?á She was a teacher, a counselor, and a mentor to younger educators who would follow her path.?á She devoted 47 years to education ?Çô first in New York, then in Ohio, and, for more than three decades, in Lee County.?á She was a finalist for the Golden Apple Award numerous times and was selected as Lee County Counselor of the Year at the elementary, middle and high school levels.?á Susan was born in Elmira, NY, just 22 days after the Pearl Harbor attack.?á While her father, Donald W. Shoemaker, served as a Navy officer in the Pacific, Susan and her mother Adele lived on her maternal grandparents?ÇÖ farm near Indianapolis.?á The family made a number of corporate moves as Susan grew up; she graduated from Atherton High School in Louisville, KY; attended the University of New York of Rochester; earned her B.A. degree from the State University of New York at Cortland; an M.Ed. from the University of Akron and an M.S. in counseling from the University of South Florida.?á?á?á Susan is survived by her husband, Edward Pritchard; a brother, John Raymond, of Webster, NY; and a sister, Jane Perry, of Mooresville, NC.?á A celebration of Susan?ÇÖs life will be held at Island Coast High School, 2125 Del Navarra Parkway, Cape Coral at 2:00 PM on Sunday, August 21, 2011.?á Memorial gifts may be made to Take Stock In Children.?á?á?á Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers, FL 33907, 239-936-0555.?á Online condolences may be made at: www.fortmyersmemorial.com.
