Thomas Walker Scott's Obituary
Thomas Walker Scott of Alva, Florida passed away suddenly following a recent illness on Friday, September 26, 2014 with his loving family by his side. He was born on October 2, 1947 in Lafayette Indiana, the proud son of Doris Chastain and Harold Scott. Mr. Scott was 66 years old at the time of his passing.Mr. Scott represented District 5 of the Lee County School District and was the current Chairman of the Lee County School Board. He graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor’s Degree and earned his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from California Coast University. Over the course of his career, Mr. Scott experienced a great deal of personal success and a number of professional achievements. He was the Director of the Southwest Florida Enterprise Center for the City of Fort Myers, Director of the Retail Institute at Purdue University where he was also an Adjunct Professor in the Schools of Consumer Science and Technology. He was also a Vice President at several prominent retailers such as Paul Harris, John Breuner and JW Robinson’s and was part of executive management at several other retail companies such as Maas Brothers, Diamond’s and Gimbel’s. Mr. Scott’s expertise in management and extensive knowledge of the retailing marketplace ensured that he was consistently in demand as a professional guest lecturer and motivational speaker. Mr. Scott was also very dedicated to public service. In addition to his work on the school board, he was also Chairman of the Board for the Alva Fire Control District and served on the Lee County EnterpriseZone Board; Healthy Start Board and the Technical Advisory Committee for the Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization.He leaves to cherish his loving memory his wife Kendra L. (Cobb) Scott; his sons Brian and Joel (Wendy) and his grandson Parker Scott. He also leaves behind a number of extended family members and scores of friends who grieve his untimely passing. Sadly, he was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Doris.A Visitation in honor of Tom will be held from 3:00 – 5:00 PM on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 and from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Thursday, October 9, 2014 in the Chapel at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Boulevard, Fort Myers, Florida 33907, (239) 936-0555.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you instead consider a donation in Tom’s memory to help area students focus on college and career readiness.
