Virginia Ann "Ginger" Nugent's Obituary

Virginia Ann Nugent (nee Glandon,) better known simply as "Ginger" to her family and friends, passed away unexpectedly at age 77 on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at Shell Point, Ft. Myers, FL. Beloved wife for 54 years of George Douglas Nugent, she was born on January 30, 1947, to Clare Elliott and Joyce Lucille Glandon (nee Kovanda), in Highland, IL. Ginger graduated as salutatorian from Kirkwood High School (MO) and went on to graduate magna cum laude with her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Northwestern University (IL) in 1969 where she was a proud member of Phi Beta Kappa honor society and Delta Gamma sorority. Ginger then went on to receive her master’s degree in engineering science with a perfect 4.0 GPA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, NY) in 1994.

Ginger met George in January 1970 at IBM in Endicott, NY; George told his colleague “I’m going to marry her,” and true to his word, they married five months later on May 23, 1970. Ginger was a devoted mother of two to Georgeanna (“Georgie”) Marie and Douglas Elliott Nugent, and dedicated her life to George and her children. They were all active members of the Vestal (NY) United Methodist Church. Both Ginger and George worked their entire careers at IBM prior to retiring in 2003. Ginger was a dedicated substitute teacher in Broome County, NY after her retirement from IBM. Ginger and George reveled in their weekends and summers on Tremont Island, in Gananoque, Ontario Canada with dear friends they have considered family since 1973. Together they enjoyed camping, skiing, swimming, and boating the canal systems and seaways with their grandchildren, Ripley and Maginn Lynch.

Ginger is survived by her devoted husband George Douglas Nugent: her two loving children Georgeanna (“Georgie”) Marie Nugent (Eric) of Saratoga Springs, NY and Douglas Elliott Nugent (Anna) of Murfreesboro, TN; her grandchildren Ripley (22) and Maginn (19) Lynch and Salvatore Nugent (4); her two siblings Robert Glandon (Victoria, deceased) of Lake George, NY and Judith McLachlin (Robert, deceased) of Chesterfield, MO; and very special friends, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Ginger was predeceased by her parents Clare Elliott and Joyce Lucille Glandon (Shell Point, Fort Myers, FL) and several loving friends and family members.

A celebration of Ginger’s life will be held at the Chianti Il Ristorante, 18 Division Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 on Sunday, May 26th from 1 to 4:00 pm; the eulogy will begin at 3pm. It is suggested that in lieu of flowers, donations in Ginger’s name can be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692 (www.heart.org) or the Literacy Volunteers of Broome/Tioga County, 185 Court St., Binghamton, NY 13901 (www.broometiogaliteracy.org).
