Walter Emil Hartwig's Obituary
Walter Emil Hartwig, a longtime resident of North Fort Myers, Florida, passed away suddenly, but peacefully, at Lee Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. He was 91 years old.
Walter was born in New York City on March 17, 1933, the proud son to Ruth (Blackmon) and Emil Hartwig. He was a Veteran of both the United States Army and the United States Air Force and, in later civilian life, also worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as an Engineer and, if that wasn't hard enough, he later worked as a provider of children's day care.
Mr. Hartwig is survived by his son Brian Hartwig (Claudia) of North Fort Myers, Allan Hartwig (Loretta) of Bradenton, FL, Scott Hartwig of North Fort Myers, Annette Unger (Geoff) of Wichita, KS and his daughter-in-law, Rhonda Hartwig. He was preceded in death by his son, Glenn Hartwig in 2014 and his wife Elizabeth J. Hartwig in 2018. Also surviving are his 3 grandchildren: Michael, Ryan (Taren) and Jeffrey; great-granddaughter Fabry and favorite fur child, Gabby, his loyal Shih Tzu dog.
A Visitation for Mr. Hartwig will be conducted from 1:00 - 1:30 PM on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 inside the Chapel at Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, 1589 Colonial Boulevard, Fort Myers, Florida 33907, (239) 936-0555. Immediately following Pastor Graham Stein will celebrate a Funeral Service for Walter at 1:30 PM also inside the Funeral Home Chapel. At the conclusion of this ceremony, friends and family will recess to adjacent Memorial Gardens Cemetery where the Honor Guard for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8463 of Cape Coral will provide Military Funeral Honors in recognition of Walter's service in defense of our country. Thereafter, Walter will be laid to rest alongside his dearly departed wife Elizabeth inside the Meditation Garden.
