William R. Casey's Obituary
William R. Casey, Jr. (“Bill”) died on November 16, 2016 from natural causes at his home in Fort Myers, FL. He was 94 years old. Bill and his twin sister Sheila were born on June 15th, 1922 in Los Angeles, CA. His parents were William R. Casey, Sr. (USNA 16’) and Clare Gordon Casey. He grew up in Rouses Point, NY where his family owned and operated a customs brokerage business. He graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, MA in 1942 and attended Amherst College before transferring to the U. S. Naval Academy where he graduated with the class of 1945. During WWII in the Pacific, Bill served on two surface ships IDAHO (BB-42) and MERVINE (DMS-31). He retired from active duty in 1947 to fork for Johns Manville Corp. as an industrial salesman until he was called back du ring the Korean War. He served on the HUGH PURVIS (DD-489) as a lieutenant and navigator during NATO operations in the North Atlantic. After retiring from the Navy in 1952, he joined his family firm, F.W. Myers & Co., where he worked as the company’s Treasurer, President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board. During Bill’s tenure, the company expanded from a small business on the Canadian Border to become a major player in the customs brokerage and freight forwarding industry during the decades of the 70’s, 80’s into the early 90’s. Bill was past president of the National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America (NCBFAA), Customs Brokers Association Northern U.S, Border and served on the boards of numerous global trade and regulatory groups including the Advisory Committee on Commercial Operations (COAC), American Association of Exporters and Importers (AAEI) and National Council on International Trade Documentation (NCITD). An avid skier, tennis player and outdoorsman, he was also a devoted husband, father, mentor and coach for his grandchildren. Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife Carlyn, whom he dated while a midshipman and married shortly after graduation. He is survived by his son, Richard and wife Andrea of Bend, OR; granddaughter Caroline Casey of Mammoth Lakes, CA and grandson John Casey of Honolulu, HI. Inurnment with military honors is planned for spring 2017 at the United States Naval Academy Columbarium in Annapolis, MD. Fort Myers Memorial Gardens Funeral Home is serving the family.
